EXATEC was founded in 1998 as 50:50 joint venture of Bayer MaterialScience and
GE Plastics with the mandate to develop polycarbonate glazing systems for the automotive market.

In 1998, EXATEC built a state-of-the-art Technology Development Center with integrated manufacturing operations in Wixom (Detroit), Michigan/USA to serve as a global center for window systems development and demonstration. This center has been operational since early 2000 and produces prototype quantities of polycarbonate windows for OEM driven technology projects. An office was established in Bergisch Gladbach, outside of Cologne, Germany to support market, design and engineering development in the European market.
EXATEC´s R&D into automotive polycarbonate glazing systems covers all processes and manufacturing steps. Starting from part design through molding, added functionality, 3D printing and decoration technologies to plasma-enhanced CVD hardcoats, including traditional as well as completely new bonding and assembly systems.

EXATEC launched its most advanced polycarbonate glazing systems - Exatec® 900, Exatec® 900vt and Exatec® 900el - which set the polycarbonate glazing standard for the automotive industry.
